چکیده

The modern electric power grid is a complex interconnected network of independent physical and electronic devices that utilize myriad technologies for communication between other devices and with centralized control centers. These technologies may be compromised by malicious parties which may, in turn, lead to degraded performance or a failure of the communications infrastructure, ultimately resulting in loss of power grid transmission and/or distribution capabilities. This paper presents a Survivable Systems Analysis (SSA) of the North American power grid communications infrastructure. The SSA is used to identify general classes of inherent and emergent weaknesses within the North American electric power grid and propose appropriate means to mediate them. The analytic technique is applicable to any national or regional power grid, and can be generalized to most widearea, complex, real-time control infrastructures such as transportation systems, natural gas distribution, and oil pipeline transmission systems.

Flexible and Robust Status Dissemination Middleware for the Electric Power Grid

Electric power grids are complex interconnected systems that in North America can span more than a thousand miles. They must be operated such that the dynamic balance between supply and demand is maintained. Grids exhibit many power dynamics that are global over the entire grid, yet their control mechanisms and almost all of their operational data on the current dynamics and configuration of th...

EPRI ORDERING INFORMATION The North American power grid faces many challenges that it was not designed and engineered to handle. Congestion and atypical power flows threaten to overwhelm the system, while demand increases for higher reliability and—since September 11, 2001—better protection. The potential ramifications of grid failures have never been greater, as transport, communications, fina...

Structural Analysis of Electrical Networks

The North American power grid is a giant network of more than 15,000 generators in 10,000 power plants, and hundreds of thousands of miles of transmission lines. Analysts estimate it to be worth over $800 billion. In 2000, the transmission and distribution infrastructure was valued at $358 billion. Geographically, the power grid forms a network of over 1 million kilometres of high voltage lines...
